Online is best. The exam's on a computer, so better to prepare on a computer. There are sets of free practice questions available from various companies--worth a look. But it's best to settle in with full exams to get a sense of what the real exam is like. For those who stubbornly want to study in books, may as well start with the questions offered in the ASWB Candidate Handbook (find it at ASWB.org). Sample exams there too.
